An empty backyard can be intimidating, especially if it’s a large one, but there are so many fun ideas you can incorporate into your backyard to make it more functional and exciting. Think of it as a green canvas and paint it in a way that best suits your and your family.

Add an Outdoor Room

Create an area that is an extension of your home by turning your deck or patio area into a place that is a reflection of your home décor. More and more people are treating their yards as part of their interiors by adding an outdoor room that incorporates comfortable places to relax, an eating area, outdoor lighting, beautiful fabrics, and cooking facilities. Think beyond the deck of the past and look for modern outdoor furniture and fabrics that are more inviting.

Create a Play Area

Play areas in your backyard aren’t necessarily for children and they don’t have to incorporate a large swing set or jungle gym. Keep an area of your yard available for games that both kids and adults can enjoy like lawn darts, ladder golf, bocce ball, horseshoes, croquet and anything else you can think of. You can purchase an outdoor storage container to hold your game supplies or store them in the garage or house.

Water features are still a very popular element for backyard landscaping. They’re soothing and bring a sense of quiet elegance to any yard. A large pond is actually quite easy to install but can prove to be a hassle in the long run with leaves, bugs and refilling the pond but it can be largely rewarding. If you’re not prepared to deal with a large water feature or don’t have the space, try a smaller one. Most garden stores carry water features that range in size from small table top ones to huge features that can overwhelm a yard, you just need to pick one that suits your needs.

Grow a Garden

Gardens are becoming very trendy, even the Obamas have added one to their new yard. Gardening is not only a fun backyard idea but it’s incredibly rewarding and a financial windfall. Your garden will provide you with fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs throughout the growing season, giving your meals an inexpensive blast of wholesome flavor. Not only are products grown in your own garden very cheap, they’re also much more flavorful than what you’ll find in the grocery store.

The key to giving your backyard a sense of fun and excitement is thinking of it as useful space.
